FAQs
Laser Levels are invaluable when you need a straight and level reference point; almost like a virtual chalk line. There are lots of different variations to think about, such as whether you need vertical lines, horizontal or both, what colour the beam should be and whether it will be used indoors or outdoors. This last point is an important one; ‘outdoor’ Laser Levels use a brighter, more powerful laser to ensure visibility in natural light, so are more expensive than their ‘indoor’ counterparts.
A feature that isn’t always available but is worth looking out for, is “self-levelling”. A self-levelling laser corrects itself regardless of any irregularities in the surface the laser has been placed on; this makes them quicker and simpler to use, as well as more accurate when compared to levels which are calibrated using a spirit level bubble.
The most common type of Laser Level now is the Line Level, which does what it says on the box and displays horizontal and vertical lines either together as a cross hair or as separate lines on a ceiling, wall or floor. If choosing a Line Level, think about the working visibility range your level can project, the accuracy of the beam and the number of beams your level can give you.
An alternative to a Line Levels would be a Rotary Level. These rotate 360°, providing a constant horizontal line through a complete circle. There are also Specialist Levels available, such as Inclinometers and Plumb Bobs.
At ToolStore UK, we sell Laser Levels with both red and green beams. But which should you choose? Fundamentally, there are two factors to consider; cost and distance. Green lasers offer greater distance and improved visibility but those advantages come at a price. Therefore, if you need a Laser Level but have a restricted budget, a red laser may be the right choice. However, for many users, visibility is the most important factor and that makes green lasers a clear favourite; they are between 10 and 50 times brighter than red lasers which makes green lasers four more times more visible to the naked eye than red.
