How long are tape measures?

The length of the tape measure ribbon is perhaps the most important factor to consider when it comes to choosing a tape measure. If it’s too short, it quite simply won't do the job.

Our self-adhesive tape measures start at 3.5 metres, perfect for smaller woodworking projects. For jobs around the home, like hanging picture frames or measuring cabinets, a small 2 metre pocket tape measure may be enough. But if you’re looking for something more substantial, we offer tape measures that extend to an impressive 10 metres — ideal for large projects. Our tape measures also come in lengths of 5 metres, and 8 metres.

How accurate are tape measures?

A tape measure’s accuracy is determined by standards set out by the European Committee, with three classes available — EC Class I, EC Class 2 and EC Class 3. EC Class I are the most accurate tape measures on the market and are perfect for professional work where precision is essential. However, they do tend to be slightly more expensive.

Auto-lock tape measures

Tape measures with an auto-lock function lock into place, temporarily preventing them from retracting. The extended ribbon stays locked in place until the button is pressed, where it can retract back into the tape measure.

Magnetic tape measures

Magnetic tape measures are becoming more and more popular. Magnets at the end of the ribbon are strong enough to ‘stick’ to ferrous materials, making them extremely convenient as you won’t need a second pair of hands to help you out while you measure.

Self-adhesive tape measures

Kreg’s self-adhesive metric tape features a self-adhesive backing and fit snugly into the indentation on the top side of the Kreg Top Trak and Heavy-Duty Trak. Metallic tape is highly scuff-resistant and can be trimmed to the required length with scissors.

Cheap tape measures

For low cost, budget tape measures that don’t sacrifice on quality, consider a no-frills tape measure. These are particularly useful if you constantly damage or lose your measuring tapes and can't justify paying for a professional-grade tool!
