Our range of extension leads will extend electrical power to wherever you need it, so you have the power you need to complete the job at hand. These leads are also great if you need a more permanent solution to a home appliance that is just out of reach of a power source. At ToolStore UK, our extension leads come from leading brands, including DETA and Defender, and are available in a variety of sizes, from handy 2 metre cables right up to a mighty 25 metres for extra-long reach! Extension cables give you the flexibility you need to power tools, lights and other electrical gadgets with ease. Lookout for extension cable reels that wind the cable neatly back in after use.
You can safely connect several devices to one extension lead but only up to a certain maximum load. To find out the maximum recommended load, check the extension lead’s manufacturer’s specifications. You should be able to find the specifications printed on the extension lead itself. It is usually around 3,500W and 13A but always check first — an overloaded extension lead can overheat, causing highly flammable materials to ignite and catch fire.
It is not safe to put an extension lead into another extension lead. Sometimes called ‘daisy-chaining’, plugging one extension lead into another increases electrical resistance that can lead to overheating and fires. You should only use one extension cable per socket. Your extension lead should also have a fuse. That way, if your extension lead does overload, it will shut down — reducing the risk of fire. When in use, ensure that the extension cable is unwound and detangled to prevent it overheating and, when stored away, don’t wrap the cord around the lead as this can damage the wires inside.
A standard extension cable will be sufficient for most small tools or basic appliances. However you may want to choose a heavy-duty extension lead if you are planning to use heavy-duty equipment or tools such as table saws and demolition hammers. Heavy-duty extension leads are generally rated at 3kw (13amp) and are ideal for industrial use and on the jobsite. They are made with a tough, high-grade rubber cable that is more durable than PVC cable but still as flexible. At ToolStore UK, our extension leads come from leading brands you can trust, including DETA and Defender.
