What is the maximum recommended load of an extension lead?

You can safely connect several devices to one extension lead but only up to a certain maximum load. To find out the maximum recommended load, check the extension lead’s manufacturer’s specifications. You should be able to find the specifications printed on the extension lead itself. It is usually around 3,500W and 13A but always check first — an overloaded extension lead can overheat, causing highly flammable materials to ignite and catch fire.

Is it safe to put an extension lead on an extension lead?

It is not safe to put an extension lead into another extension lead. Sometimes called ‘daisy-chaining’, plugging one extension lead into another increases electrical resistance that can lead to overheating and fires. You should only use one extension cable per socket. Your extension lead should also have a fuse. That way, if your extension lead does overload, it will shut down — reducing the risk of fire. When in use, ensure that the extension cable is unwound and detangled to prevent it overheating and, when stored away, don’t wrap the cord around the lead as this can damage the wires inside.

When would I need to use a heavy-duty extension lead?

A standard extension cable will be sufficient for most small tools or basic appliances. However you may want to choose a heavy-duty extension lead if you are planning to use heavy-duty equipment or tools such as table saws and demolition hammers. Heavy-duty extension leads are generally rated at 3kw (13amp) and are ideal for industrial use and on the jobsite.
