What is a Kreg jig and what is it used for?

Kreg jigs help woodworkers and DIYers drill what are known as pocket holes, allowing you to complete your projects faster and better than before. These holes allow screws to be inserted at an angle, running along the grain of the wood, producing a much stronger and secure joint.

Why use a Kreg jig?

Kreg jigs offer an alternative to more traditional woodworking methods, such as mortise and tenon joints. It is perfect for woodworkers of all abilities, from beginners who simply want to build something to professional woodworkers who can use it when the joint style is not important or in areas where you will not see the pocket holes.

What is Kreg pocket hole system?

Kreg pocket holes are holes drilled at an angle into one workpiece, that you then join to a second workpiece with self-tapping screws. You won’t need to leave your joint clamped up and you don’t necessarily need to use glue. There are no alignment frustrations because you only machine one workpiece at a time!

What angle are Kreg pocket holes?

The stepped drill bit enters the wood at a 15° angle.

How does a Kreg jig work and how do I use it?

Kreg Jigs allow screws to be inserted at an angle, what are known as pocket holes. They may look complicated but they are surprisingly simple to use. Just measure your wood, set the Kreg jig to the required width and use the guided slots to drill perfect pocket holes. For how to use a Kreg jig on a 45 degree joint, check out this video from the Kreg website.

Who invented the Kreg jig and when was the Kreg jig invented?

Craig Sommerfeld invented the pocket-hole jig, dubbed ‘Craig’s Jig’ in 1986. While building his home, he needed to find a way to attach his dowelled face frames to his kitchen cabinet carcass. His pocket-hole did just that, allowing him to attach the face frames from the cabinet’s interior, where the joint could be hidden from view. Craig demonstrated his jig at local woodworking shows every weekend and the Kreg Tool company soon emerged, later to become the industry leader in pocket-hole technology.

Which Kreg jig is right for me?

Whether you’re beginning in DIY or an experienced woodworker, a Kreg jig makes it easy to create solid wood projects and make long-lasting repairs. There are several types and models to choose from. For large projects, Kreg K5 jig is a great choice. If you’re working with larger stock, framing walls, building deck railings, outdoor furniture or other large projects, the Kreg Jig HD will deliver the strength you need. For more specific applications, check out the Kreg Cabinet System, the Kreg Deck Jig System and the Kreg Drawer Slide Jig. Click here for the full range of Kreg jigs available at ToolStoreUK.

Is the Kreg K5 worth it?

Many woodworkers look forward to the release of a new Kreg jig. The new one always delivers an improvement over its predecessor, addressing any shortcomings, and the Kreg K5 is no exception. The K5 builds on all the good features of the Kreg K4 and, although the two have many similarities, there are things that set the K5 apart from the K4. The clamping system on the K5 has a ratcheting clamp that slides into place against your workpiece much more easily. Once in place, lift the handle until it clicks (twice) into place. The K5 also delivers more support for larger pieces with large support wings that attach effortlessly on both sides. The K4 has a rigid dust collection port, but the K5 improves on this with a removable dust collector port that swivels from one side to the other. Unlike the K4, the K5 has a front-mounted handle, offering easy set up and clamping.

Is Kreg foreman worth it?

The Kreg DB210-EUR Foreman creates pocket-holes with remarkable speed and accuracy. Clamp your workpiece into place and start the powerful motor by pulling the large handle. Raise the drill bit through the table to deliver precisely placed pocket holes at the perfect depth in materials from 12-38mm thick. Clear markings in the table make it easy to position the adjustable fence for precise pocket depth and the two spring-loaded-stops deliver perfect, repeatable accuracy. Click here to learn more about the Kreg Foreman Pocket-Hole.

Can you use a Kreg jig on mdf and plywood?

Yes. Plywood is made from layers of wood veneer. MDF is sold in large sheets like plywood but is made differently. Just be careful not to overtighten and it may be worth backing it up with glue to make a good bond.

Can I use a Kreg jig on 2x4 and 4x4?

The Kreg Jig HD is ideal for use with materials that are 1½” and thicker and, for best results, you will also need to use Kreg Jig HD screws as they are optimised for use with the Kreg Jig HD. These heavy-duty, hardened-steel screws provide incredible shear-resistance, as well as three anti-corrosion layers for incredible long-term moisture resistance.

How strong are Kreg jig joints?

Independent testing found that a pocket screw is 35% stronger than a mortise and tenon joint. The pocket screw joint failed at 707lbs when subjected to a shear load, compared to a mortise and tenon joint that failed at 453lbs. The Kreg system uses self-tapping steel screws, replacing wood fasteners dowels, biscuits and tenons. They are much stronger, exerting a huge amount of clamping pressure between the two surfaces, which adhesive manufacturers say is one of the most important factors in producing a solid glue joint. The screws keep the two pieces permanently clamped together.

How to Kreg jig a table top?

This video from Kreg Tools will show you how you can edge join (assemble workpieces edge to edge) to create a table top.

Where are Kreg jigs and Kreg track saws made?

Kreg has headquarters located in Huxley, Iowa in the US. Their tools are made in their Iowa-based in-house manufacturing facility.

Who sells Kreg jigs?

At ToolStoreUK, we sell a range of Kreg jigs, from the KPHJ310 single hole version and the K5 to the Kreg Jig HD, the Kreg Cabinet System, the Kreg Deck Jig System and the Kreg Drawer Slide Jig. Order by 4pm for next day delivery*.

Which Kreg clamp should I buy?

It really depends on what you are trying to clamp. A Kreg face clamp is a versatile clamp for most kinds of jigs and pocket hole screws, and its flat face won’t make a dent in your workpiece. A corner clamp or a right-angle clamp, such as the Kreg KHCRA-INT Right Angle Clamp with Automaxx, have jaws set at 90° making it perfect for mitred pieces like the corners of a picture frame. Bench clamps are extremely versatile tools, mounted securely to a table or a workbench and used to hold the wood firmly in place. In line clamps apply pressure from the side, rather than overhead, staying out the way as you work. Clamps featuring Kreg’s Automaxx technology automatically adjusts to the thickness material. You simply set your preferred clamping pressure with the thumb screw, and the Automaxx clamp will maintain the exact clamping pressure to future clamps regardless of the material depth. View our full range of Kreg clamps here.

How do Kreg bench clamp systems work?

It can be difficult to find the right clamp for your job, whether it’s a C-clamp that only works at the very edges of your workbench or your bench dog that only works where you’ve got holes that are pre-drilled. However, with the Kreg Clamp System you can work wherever and however you need to by adding a clamping station just about anywhere. The Bench Clamp can be removed quickly from the clamping station when it’s not in use, leaving you with a perfectly flat work surface again. The bench clamp swivels a full 360° in any direction so that you can position it exactly where you need it and you can use up to 400 pounds of force, without compromising on the accuracy and control, even while working on the smallest workpiece.

Why use Kreg screws?

The Kreg Jig makes it easy to assemble with screws, rather than using more complex joints that need advanced tools and experience. But it’s the Kreg screws that make it all hold together. There are several reasons why Kreg screws create a strong, long-lasting joint. Kreg screws have a square-drive head which prevents the driver bit spinning, slipping or stripping out the screw head. The head on a Kreg screw is flat on the bottom, rather than conical, which seats firmly in the pocket hole. When the force is applied straight toward the screw tip, pressing evenly on the pocket, it holds the joint tightly together without splitting the wood. The threads on a Kreg screw stop halfway up the shank of the screw. The part that is threaded grabs the workpiece your attaching it to, pulling it together, while the unthreaded part glides smoothly, allowing that piece to pull tightly without any restriction from superfluous threads. Kreg screws are made from case-hardened steel so they won’t bend or break under torque forces as they are driven in, while the softer core prevents them from becoming brittle. And, as they have a self-tapping tip, there’s no need for a pilot hole.

Which Kreg screw should I use?

Selecting the right screw for your Kreg project is easy and based on the thickness of your material. The Kreg SSW Screw Selector Wheel makes it easier than ever to build projects with Kreg tools. Just dial the thickness of each piece to be joined, whether they’re the same thickness or different, and the wheel will tell you the correct screw length and Kreg Jig setting. Or use this useful chart for direction on what screw length to use for your project:

Can Kreg screws be used outside?

For projects outside you’ll want a screw with an anti-corrosion coating. Kreg’s BlueKote screws have three anti-corrosion layers, are rust resistant and work with pressure-treated materials. Click here for Kreg Bluekote screws. If you are using 2x or bigger stock for your project, Kreg HD Screws are made exclusively for use with stock that is 1 ½" thick and thicker and are coated to be suitable for outdoor use.

Are Kreg screws stainless steel?

Kreg offer a range of screws for different applications. Kreg Zinc screws are a good choice for a wide variety of indoor projects with limited exposure to the elements, providing adequate rust protection and an affordable alternative to more protective screws. Kreg stainless steel screws are the best for rust-prevention and are specially designed for projects that will have excessive exposure to water or ACQ-treated lumber. BlueKote screws provide rust-resistance up to 400% greater than zinc-plated screws. They feature three anti-corrosion layers, making them ideal for a wide variety of indoor and outdoor projects.

What size are Kreg screws?

How many Kreg screws to use?

As a rule, when gluing panels, it is advisable to have a screw about 2" from each end, and space the screws every 6" to 8" along.

How strong are Kreg screws?

Because they are made from case-hardened steel, Kreg screws won’t bend or break under torque forces as they are driven in. Their softer core prevents them from becoming brittle.
