What should I look for when buying a Cordless Multi Tool?

Cordless Multi Tools are a real ‘all-rounder’ and can be used for cutting, sanding, scraping and rasping.

There are various aspects to consider when choosing a Multi Tool. Among the most important is the Oscillations Per Minute – the number of times the blade moves from one side back to the other. If the speed is too low, the blade will be unable to cut, but if it too high, you could scorch the material you’re working with.

Also look at the oscillation angle; this is how far the blade moves from side to side. The greater the angle, the greater the movement. Check whether your preferred tool uses a ‘standard’ tool holder or a ‘starlock’, as this will affect which attachments and accessories you can use with your Multi Tool.

Which is better: brushless or brushed Multi Tools?

Brushed motors use carbon brushes to transfer power from the fixed part of the motor to the rotor. This creates a reliable and relatively inexpensive motor, but brushed motors do require regular maintenance, in order to either clean the brushes or replace them as they wear out. A brushless motor, by contrast, uses a magnet mounted on the rotor to generate the power and electrical switching to perform the function carried out by the brushes. The additional complexity of the motor’s working means that brushless motors are usually more expensive than brushed.

Which voltage should I choose?

Our Cordless Multi Tool range includes tools running on batteries from 10.8v through to 18v. Which is right for you will depend on various factors, including compatibility with the other tools in your kit; if you already have several 18v machines from one manufacturer, the batteries will usually be interchangeable.

"The weight is very balanced and feels good in the hand with or without gloves, the vibration is Incredibly slight and if wearing thick gloves in a noisy environment you might not think it was running if the light didn’t turn on, however still incredibly noisy once cutting, use good quality blades and nothing stops it. It would have been good to have a trigger on/off switch for those small cuts but a switch is a switch. Overall a mega step up from the last Makita one I’ve had. I wasn’t going to buy one but Toolstoreuk had the cheapest one (which came across by chance). It arrived very quickly and without hassles. Would I buy one again, yes but not at the price Makita originally wanted for it. "
