What is the best DeWalt planer??
DeWalt surface planers are designed to accurately and efficiently level timber. At ToolStore UK, we’re pleased to stock an array of DeWalt planers to cater to any smoothing task.
Our cordless planers are available as body-only tools — ideal for pairing with your existing DeWalt battery — or complete kits. A top body-only choice with batteries is the DeWalt DCP580. This lightweight model can cut up to depths of 2mm in one pass, and its planing width of 82mm makes it ideal for most woodworking tasks. A brushless motor offers efficiency, while an integrated dust extraction port means you can add a DeWalt planer dust bag or another extraction tool.
How to use a DeWalt planer?
DeWalt blade planers offer user-friendly designs, making them a great option for woodworkers of all experiences. Follow these very simple steps to get levelling.
- Secure the piece of timber you’re planning using clamps.
- Hold the planer parallel to your wood and place the shoe (the front panel) at one end of the wood.
- Switch your DeWalt planer on and push it evenly along the wood
- Lift the planer slightly As you reach the end of the length of wood (like an aeroplane taking off).
- Return the planer to where you started and repeat the process until the wood is smooth and level.
How to adjust a DeWalt planer?
Like many other electric planers, DeWalt models include a dial at the top. This dial adjusts the depth of the blades so you can achieve shallow or deeper planing.
How to change the blades on a DeWalt planer?
Your DeWalt surface planer will come with a hex key — use this to unscrew the blade holder at the bottom of the tool. Take the top and bottom plates off, and you can then slide the existing blade out. Insert the new blade (flat side down), and replace the blade holder and plates.

DeWalt planer FAQs
Can you sharpen DeWalt planer blades??
We don’t recommend sharpening your DeWalt planer blades. They are double-sided to provide a longer lifespan, and sharpening them can lead to uneven results.
Is a planer better than a sander?
Planers and sanders provide different results. If you have uneven wood, a planer can level it, but it won’t buff out any small imperfections — that’s where a sander can come in. When woodworking, it’s best to invest in both a planer and a sander to get the best finish on your timber.
How thick can a DeWalt planer cut?
Different DeWalt planer models have different maximum cutting depths. Many models can achieve 2mm cuts in one pass, while some offer 3mm. You can also run multiple passes to take more than 3mm away.
